What stays free
Browsing characters, reading the forum, the first message a character sends you and conversation summaries. You are never charged for something you did not ask for.
When credits come back
Images, video clips and spoken audio are charged before they are generated, because the provider is paid whether or not you keep the result. If a generation fails, the credits are returned automatically. Everything else is charged only once the work has succeeded.
